Rabbi Klein's Torah Stuudy 2011 - 2012

SHABBAT MORNING TORAH STUDY - RABBI KLEIN
Family Dynamics in the Bible:
The Causes of Conflict, the Roots of Reconciliation

The Bible features an extraordinary variety of family relationships: husbands and wives, parents and children, brothers and sisters, grandparents and grandchildren. And these relationships, explored with realism and insight, are remarkably like our own. With often surgical precision, the Bible uncovers the nature and foundations of healthy relationships, the reasons that relationships go sour, and the ways in which families can heal themselves. Among the relationships we will consider are those between Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Abraham and Sarah and Isaac and Ishmael, Isaac and Rebekah and Jacob and Esau, Joseph and his brothers, Moses and Aaron and Miriam, Hannah and Elkanah, David and Bathsheba, and Ruth and Naomi. We will also think about the Bible’s idea of family as metaphor: The Jewish people as a sometimes cooperative, sometimes quarrelling family; and the audacious claim that all human beings are brothers and sisers and that we are all children of God.
We will begin on September 10 with an overview of biblical literature and biblical history and a summary of the Bible’s wisdom about the human condition. All are welcome… beginners and veterans alike!

Rabbi Klein's Torah Study 2010-2011

It is the New Year 5771, and we are again starting Torah Study. Rabbi Klein's letter to participants explains the plan for the coming year, and is reprinted below.

"... This year we will focus on one of the most fascinating books in the entire Bible: The Book of Daniel. By scholarly consensus, Daniel was the last of the biblical books to be composed (during the period of the Maccabees) when the Jews came under massive assault and when the future looked perilous. In dealing with this crisis, the authors reached for new ideas and new insights. And so, aside from being a book filled with dramatic incidents and memorable characters … characters who remind us of earlier heroes like Joseph and Esther, Daniel introduces the first definitive expression of the notion of the Resurrection of the Body and pioneers a new understanding of how the world works … the worldview of the apocalypse. This extraordinary conception continues to find dramatic literary and real-life expression throughout history and down to our own day.

We will read The Book of Daniel carefully and then trace the development of the apocalyptic worldview in such post-biblical works like The First Book of Enoch, The Fourth Book of Ezra, the New Testament’s Book of Revelation, and others."
