Rabbi Klein's Torah Study 2012-2013

Dear Torah Study Participants,

I am pleased to inform you that we will begin another year of Torah Study together on Shabbat morning, September 8th at 9:15 a.m.in the Hartzmark Room at the Temple in Beachwood.   This year our topic will be: Doubt, Fear and Hope: The Bible's Search for a Sturdy Faith.  We will look carefully at a variety of biblical individuals and authors who struggle with the problems, the precariousness, and the tragedies of life ... all of which stand in the way of developing and sustaining faith and often lead to skepticism, cynicism and despair; and, conversely, we will explore the reasons that making faith worth struggling for as well as the rewards of achieving a sturdy, realistic and mature faith.  We will look at several passages rom The Five Books of Moses as well as the struggles of Jeremiah and Job and the authors of several biblical Psalms and of the Book of Lamentations.  And we will reach into the rabbinic and modern periods, as well, and see how this "faith adventure" is undertaken by the likes of Rabbi Akiva, Judah Halevi and Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik.
As always, we will devote our first session to an overview of biblical literature and biblical  history, a consideration of some of the themes, structure, and literary contents of the Hebrew Scriptures, the place of the Bible in the history of Judaism, and an attempt to summarize the Bible's wisdom about the human condition.  Then we will launch into our topic.  I am very much looking forward to another year of exciting study and lively conversation.   I hope that you will be a regular participant in our discussion.  And, if you know others who might find pleasure and meaning in Torah Study, please do invite them to join us.
I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a
healthy, happy and fulfilling New Year.

Sincerely yours,
Roger C. Klein

Rabbi
